- REGISTERING NAME STRIPPER AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
- ====================================================
- Name Stripper is not free. Sites using this software MUST register it,
- one copy per person. Contact the author for site licensing information.
- Or you can consider the following.
-
- 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
- I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
- I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
- register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
- an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
- deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
- like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
-
- See the documentation which should accompany this file for more information
- on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should also accompany this file.
- Please use it to register the software.
-
- USING NAME STRIPPER
- ====================
- • If you use Name Stripper, please please please send me a note. My addresses
- (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
- information in the above section on registration.
-
- What Does Name Stripper Do?
- ---------------------------
- • Name Stripper, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box), removes name
- extensions from files, folders, and entire directories of the two.
-
- • Read further if you plan to use Name Stripper with aliases.
-
- Using Name Stripper
- -------------------
- • Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
- style”. Name Stripper will scan folders and disks provided, and will
- modify (if preferences allow, of course), the names of all files and
- directories, no matter what their depth. Drop Boxes require Apple
- Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher.
-
- • Name Stripper searches file names for the extensions you have set up
- in the Extensions dialog. If the extension appears at the beginning or
- end of a file name, it is removed. If an extension is found in a file name,
- the extension is deleted, and the search continues until there are no
- extensions on the file name. So, if your file is named “small file copy alias”,
- and you have set up “small ”, “ copy”, and “ alias” as extensions, the
- resulting file name will be “file”.
-
- • You can include the wild card character ‘?’ to stand for any character.
- ‘*’ is interpreted exactly the same as the ‘?’, treated on a character
- for character basis. So you could include an extension “sma??” or
- “sma**” which would catch all occurrences of “small”, “smack”,
- “smash”, etc.
-
- • Double-click on Name Stripper to modify the preferences and extensions,
- and to see the about box information.
-
- • Alerts are very annoying, especially in Drop Boxes. So there aren’t any. As
- a rule of thumb: if it doesn't work, there must have been an error.
-
- • To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Files already processed
- will remain modified.
-
- Name Stripper and Aliases
- ------------------------
- Since the Finder resolves all aliases when you drop them into a Drop Box,
- Name Stripper can only think that you dropped the target (not the alias)
- in to be modified. The way to overcome this problem is to put the aliases
- you wish to modify into their own directory and drag that folder into the
- Drop Box. If you don't want the folder to be modified, hold down the option
- key so you can modify the appropriate preferences. The rule with Drop Boxes
- is that if you drop in an alias, the target is modified. If an alias is inside
- a directory that is dropped in, the alias is modified.
-
- For example, if you plan to strip the keyword “ alias” from all your alias files
- and folders, enter “ alias” in the extensions list. (You want to delete the space,
- so include it, too). Make sure that the Modify contents preference is on. Drag
- the folder containing the alias files or folders to strip the extension from the
- names.
-
- Preferences
- -----------
- • The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
- dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
- set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don't want to see that
- window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
- Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything.
-
- • The Extensions window will not come up automatically. Make sure you press
- the Extensions... button to set up the name keywords to be stripped.
-
- • The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
- alert before modifying anything. By choosing to modify directories, you
- have decided that folders themselves can be modified. You can modify files
- and folders inside those folders which you have dropped in by checking the
- Modify contents box. For example, if you drop in a folder containing three files
- and another folder, and have Modify contents on but Modify directories off, the
- folders’ names will remain unchanged, but the names of all contained files
- (including those inside the second folder) will be modified according to your
- extensions.
-
- • To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
- option key while the program is launching.
-
- • To bypass the “check” alert that appears before anything is modified, hold
- down the shift key while the program is launching, or after you hit OK to
- hide the Preferences dialog.
-
- USING DROP BOXES
- =================
- Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
- of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
- icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
- The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
- You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
- just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
- combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
- files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
- directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
- directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
- and thus their target (parent) is modified.
